The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, has outlined the key achievements of his administration as he marked one year in office, reaffirming his commitment to transparent, accountable, and people-oriented governance.

In a statement issued to commemorate the milestone, Hon. Undiandeye expressed gratitude to God, the people of Obudu, and the Cross River State Government for their unwavering support, describing his first year in office as a period of “steady progress and impactful service,” despite the economic challenges confronting local governments across the country.

According to the Chairman, his administration has recorded significant progress in infrastructure, education, agriculture, empowerment, healthcare, and peacebuilding across the ten wards of Obudu.

Hon. Undiandeye highlighted the grading and compacting of several major streets, including Ugar Umbe Street, Ada Akinsheye Close, Silver Maris Drive, Raphael Nawa’s Street, Prof. Moses Agana’s Street and Close, Chief Joseph Anale Street, and other roads in the Bekpam and Ranch Road areas, as well as Sacred Heart Primary School Road, Bedia, Bedia–Ibong Road, and the Assemblies of God Church axis.

The council also completed the renovation of the executive chambers, council secretariat, and lodge, while constructing a bridge in Ukpe Ward to connect several communities and a box culvert in Angiaba/Begiaka Ward linking Natty Ugbe–Ibong Village and surrounding settlements.

Additionally, the council procured mini-buses to ease local transportation, subsidized transport costs to support residents, and created job opportunities for youths.

To improve access to clean and potable water, the administration completed the installation and reticulation of solar-powered boreholes with tank stands in Begiading Ward, Urban II, Utugwang North, Utugwang South, and Angiaba/Begiaka Wards.

The Chairman also reintroduced the monthly sanitation exercise and embarked on an urban renewal drive that included the restoration of solar-powered traffic lights, installation of streetlights, and provision of a new electricity transformer for the Indiabeb community. He further donated a power generator to the College of Nursing Sciences, Obudu, to ease their power challenges.

In a bid to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security, the council distributed 1,000 bags of fertilizer, agrochemicals, and other farm inputs, including seedlings and financial support, to farmers across the LGA. The Chairman noted that several youths were sponsored for skills acquisition and empowerment programmes, while others were facilitated into public service positions.

Hon. Undiandeye’s administration also distributed 20,000 exercise books, 100 marker boards, and refill inks to public schools across the LGA. It purchased UTME forms and paid tuition fees for students in tertiary institutions to encourage academic excellence. Significant progress has also been made in reviving adult and continuous education to increase literacy rates in Obudu, with ongoing renovation works at the skill acquisition centre.

In collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, the council organized a free medical outreach targeting the aged, women, and children, alongside the distribution of rice, wrappers, and cash to public school teachers. Obudu LGA also actively participated in national and state initiatives, including World AIDS Day, World Cancer Day, the State Cultural Carnival, Children’s Day, and Independence Day celebrations.

Undiandeye further enhanced healthcare delivery through the production of 20,000 patient cards and 5,000 ANC cards for the 69 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in the area. His administration supported malnutrition interventions, routine immunization, and key health campaigns such as World Malaria Day, World Nutrition Day, World Tuberculosis (TBL) Day, and World HIV/AIDS Day.

He also facilitated the deployment of NYSC medical doctors to the LGA to oversee the operation of PHCs during routine visits, supported the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) campaign, and directed an appraisal of the ALGON Hospital at Kikung, Ukpe Ward, for possible renovation to improve access to quality healthcare.

The council helmsman also extended humanitarian support to vulnerable groups through monthly stipends for widows and the aged across all ten wards. Other welfare programmes included the celebration of International Women’s Day with widows and women living with disabilities, Girl Child Day sensitization with free distribution of sanitary pads, and a Valentine’s Day outreach during which hospital bills were cleared for indigent patients.

To strengthen inter-community relations, the Chairman engaged with his counterparts from Kwande and Vandiekya Local Government Areas of Benue State to sustain cross-border peace and cooperation. He also maintained regular security collaborations with traditional rulers, vigilante groups, and law enforcement agencies.

The council boss noted that his administration has successfully hosted several editions of the Obudu Solemn Assembly, promoting unity, faith, and moral renewal among residents. He also upgraded the Obudu New Yam Festival to boost cultural tourism and community pride.

The Executive Chairman enjoys a robust working relationship with the legislative arm of the council. This collaboration has translated into his assent to five executive bills passed by the honourable councillors as bye-laws to aid and guide effective administration and economic development at the grassroots.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusive leadership, the Chairman said he routinely consults with critical stakeholders at home and in the diaspora, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and party faithful, to ensure participatory decision-making.

“Our administration is committed to building an Obudu where governance truly serves the people,” Hon. Undiandeye said. “This one year has been about progress, partnership, and purpose, and we will continue to work for the good of all.”

He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the socio-economic well-being of Obudu residents in alignment with the People First mantra of Governor Bassey Edet Otu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, calling for continued support and prayers from the people of Obudu and Cross River State.

It will be recalled that Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, alongside his colleagues, emerged victorious in the local government elections conducted by the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) on November 2, 2024, and was subsequently inaugurated by Governor Bassey Otu on November 4, 2024.
