Cross River Government Seeks FG Collaboration On Food Security, WASH In The State

On Thursday, at Dan Archibong’s Lodge in Calabar, Senator Bassey Otu, the Executive Governor of Cross River State, sought collaboration with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government to address crucial issues such as food security, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in the state.

Governor Otu emphasized the significance of water in food production and commended the federal government’s efforts in improving water resources, particularly in the River Basins. He expressed the state’s openness to more River Basins, citing ongoing feasibility studies in multiple locations. Governor Otu highlighted the prompt alignment of the State Executive Council with federal ministers to explore areas of synergy and bring about benefits for Cross Riverians.

Despite being a subnational entity, Cross River, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, is committed to people-oriented policies and programs, according to Governor Otu. He emphasized the importance of achieving food security quickly, stating that it serves as a foundation for the security of other societal segments. The governor also outlined the state’s efforts to enhance sanitation and hygiene, aiming to eradicate open defecation entirely.

Governor Otu sought the support of the Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Bello Goronyo, and proposed collaborations with relevant MDAs, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, to achieve the state’s objectives.

Hon. Bello Goronyo, in turn, praised Governor Otu’s leadership and mentioned his team’s familiarization visit to the River Basin. He acknowledged the projects slated for execution in partnership with the state government, expressing gratitude for Governor Otu’s budgetary provision as counterpart funding. The minister affirmed his ministry’s commitment to supporting and delivering projects that would enhance the living standards of the people in Cross River State.
