The Executive Chairman of Biase Local Government Council, Hon. Edodi Edodi Eyong, is steadily emerging as one of the most proactive grassroots leaders in the current administration of Cross River State, with a leadership record anchored on practical development, strategic interventions and direct investment in the wellbeing of the people.

Since assuming office in 2024, Edodi has pursued a broad-based development agenda covering infrastructure, education, political organisation, security, social welfare and economic empowerment. Some of the projects initiated by his administration have been completed, while others are ongoing, reflecting a deliberate effort to create lasting development assets and address critical needs across the 11 wards of Biase.

His administration has also invested in education through scholarship support for students in tertiary institutions. Over 120 beneficiaries, including undergraduates and postgraduate students, have received financial assistance. Shortlisted undergraduates received ₦200,000 each, while postgraduate students received ₦250,000 each, providing financial relief to beneficiaries and encouraging young people to pursue their academic aspirations.

The Chairman’s growing record of interventions and leadership achievements recently earned him a National Merit Award in Abuja, alongside other local awards and recognitions. These honours further underscore the recognition his administration has attracted for its grassroots impact.

Beyond infrastructure and economic development, the Edodi administration has prioritised peace and security, recognising that meaningful development can only thrive in a stable environment. The Council has intervened in security challenges affecting Biakpan and Etono 2, as well as intra-communal clashes among Erei communities and the interstate crisis involving Biase and Ebonyi State. These interventions reflect the Chairman’s commitment to protecting lives, promoting peaceful coexistence and creating an enabling environment for residents to pursue their livelihoods and businesses.

A former APC Chapter Chairman in Biase Local Government, Edodi has also demonstrated a strong understanding of grassroots political organisation. In a significant intervention, he recently presented motorcycles to APC Ward Chairmen across the Local Government Area and a vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata, to the APC Chapter Chairman, Rt. Hon. Bassey Sunday Bassey. The support is expected to enhance mobility, grassroots coordination and effective engagement with communities, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Beyond political organisation, the Chairman has placed considerable emphasis on economic empowerment. His recent business empowerment programme benefited more than 100 indigenes across the 11 wards with practical equipment, including deep freezers, sewing machines, generators, hair dryers and clippers, among other business-support items.

The breadth of the intervention distinguishes the Edodi administration as one of the more comprehensive grassroots-focused local government administrations under the current state government. By combining infrastructure development, educational support, security interventions, political organisation and economic empowerment, the Chairman has sought to address both immediate needs and longer-term opportunities for the people.

For Edodi, the empowerment programme is not simply about distributing items. It reflects a leadership philosophy centred on placing productive tools directly in the hands of citizens. A deep freezer can provide the foundation for a frozen-food business; a sewing machine can equip a budding tailor; a generator can keep a small enterprise running despite unreliable electricity; while hair dryers and clippers can provide the basic tools for beauty and barbing businesses.

In a deliberate effort to promote self-reliance among young people, the Council Chairman also sponsored the training of 55 young girls under his skills-acquisition scheme. The beneficiaries were trained in practical income-generating skills, including soap making, baking and pastry production, jelly production, body-cream production and perfume making, among others. To help them translate the skills into sustainable livelihoods, the beneficiaries were also provided with start-up cash support to commence their businesses.

The Chairman’s social welfare interventions have equally extended to elderly and vulnerable residents across Biase. Under the Council’s social welfare package, hundreds of women across the wards received wrappers and cash support as part of efforts to cushion hardship and provide direct assistance to some of the most vulnerable members of the community. The initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and ensuring that the benefits of government reach people across different segments of society.

The approach is consistent with the People First Agenda of the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, which places the welfare, empowerment and prosperity of citizens at the centre of governance. At the local government level, Edodi is translating that philosophy into interventions designed to have direct and measurable impact on ordinary people.

The Chairman’s leadership has continued to attract commendation from beneficiaries and community leaders. The APC Chapter Chairman, Rt. Hon. Bassey Sunday Bassey, who received the vehicle, appreciated the gesture, noting that it would enhance his mobility and strengthen grassroots coordination across Biase.

The Paramount Ruler, HRH Apostle Nicholas Odum, who benefited from a generator, also commended the Chairman for extending the empowerment initiative to the traditional institution, describing the gesture as recognition of the important role traditional leadership plays in community development.

Another beneficiary, Comr. Owai Obo, who received a generator, expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the equipment would strengthen his business and help cushion the challenges associated with irregular electricity supply. Mr. Egan-Ojoi Anakari, who received a deep freezer, also expressed appreciation for the intervention, noting its potential to support a new line of business and improve his livelihood.

The significance of the Chairman’s interventions lies not only in the number of beneficiaries but also in the practical nature of the support. Rather than providing only temporary relief, the administration is placing assets, skills and resources in the hands of citizens that can generate income, sustain families and, in some cases, create opportunities for others.

Taken together, the completed projects, ongoing initiatives, student scholarship support, security interventions, social welfare packages, skills-acquisition programme, political interventions and business empowerment programmes point to a leadership model focused on tangible outcomes.

Hon. Edodi Edodi Eyong’s emerging record therefore goes beyond individual empowerment gestures. It represents a broader attempt to strengthen Biase’s institutional structures, promote peace and security, expand economic opportunities, support education, provide social welfare and deliver development closer to the people.

At a time when local government administrations are increasingly judged by their ability to demonstrate tangible grassroots impact, the Edodi-led administration is seeking to distinguish itself through a leadership approach that puts action ahead of rhetoric and people at the centre of development.

With projects completed, others ongoing, students supported through scholarships, communities supported through security interventions, elderly and vulnerable women provided with welfare assistance, 55 young girls trained and supported with start-up funds, grassroots structures strengthened and more than 100 citizens equipped for economic activity, the Chairman is gradually building what could become a defining legacy of his tenure: a Biase where government support is translated into productive opportunities, stronger communities, greater peace and improved livelihoods.
