On January 14, 2025, the Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Vivien Mesembe Otu, led a team, including PHCDA staff, a supervising consultant, the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Area, Hon. Chris Agbeh, and members of his council, traditional leaders, the community chairman, party representatives, and residents of Egbe Mbube, in a significant ceremony: the handover of an uncompleted health center site for completion.

This event brought a sigh of relief to the people of Egbe Mbube, marking the beginning of improved healthcare access for the community. A community sensitization program preceded the handover, highlighting the project’s importance and benefits. The warm reception and enthusiastic participation of the community leaders and residents demonstrated their eagerness to embrace this vital development.

Community Engagement and Assurance in Aragban Mbube

The team also visited Aragban Mbube Central, where they were warmly welcomed by HRH-OTI THOMAS OLU ABANG, the Clan Head, and the council of chiefs. The team assured the Aragban community that the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) facility would remain within their community and that their existing facility would also undergo renovation. This addressed any concerns within the community and fostered a positive and collaborative atmosphere.

Community Engagement and Support for PHC Facilities

Throughout the visit, the team engaged with the residents of the communities, emphasizing the importance of community ownership and participation in the success of these healthcare projects.

Renovated PHC Facility in Basan Mbube West
The team also visited a renovated PHC facility in Basan Mbube West, Ward 2, a project supported by Stanbic IBTC. Dr. Otu commended Stanbic IBTC for their corporate social responsibility and encouraged other organizations to support the improvement of PHC facilities across the state.

Commitment to Healthcare Workforce in Ogoja

During the visit, the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Area, Hon. Chris Agbeh, announced plans to engage three youth corps members – two doctors and one pharmacist – to serve at the PHC in the community. This proactive step will significantly enhance healthcare delivery within the region.

Continued Commitment to Healthcare Improvement

As part of her ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access across the state, Dr. Vivien Mesembe Otu also participated in a Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) training program in the North Senatorial District.

The DG concluded her outing by visiting a facility built and abandoned at Yatche ward in Yala LGA. The visit was accompanied by the Chairman of Yala LGA and his wife who promised to renovate the facility before handing it over to the agency. The DG has promised to open the facility for the community once the handover is completed.

This series of events underscores the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency’s dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and access for all citizens. By working closely with communities, government agencies, and corporate partners, the agency strives to create a healthier future for all residents of Cross River State.
