Dear Constituents and Fellow Citizens,
Today marks the one-year anniversary of my tenure as your representative in the Cross River State House of Assembly, and I am filled with gratitude. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the good people of Yakurr 1 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly. As we reflect on the progress we have made together, I am reminded of the importance of transparency, accountability, and dedication to the welfare of our constituents.
From the very beginning of my term, I recognized the significant responsibility placed upon me and worked tirelessly to enhance my knowledge of legislative and democratic processes. Through active participation in an induction program organized by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, I sharpened my understanding of governance, equipping myself to better serve you, my constituents.
Over the past year, our shared commitment to enhancing the lives and well-being of our community has yielded significant achievements. Allow me to reflect on some of the notable projects and contributions we have accomplished together:
LEGISLATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS:
– I initiated a motion calling on the Cross River State Government to urgently evacuate all water drainages within the Calabar Metropolis. This action was taken to safeguard our community and mitigate the risks of flooding, recognizing the vulnerability faced by our constituents.
– I raised a matter of urgent public importance for the retrieval of heavy-duty equipment and machines belonging to Cross River State. By ensuring proper utilization of state resources, we prevent private misuse and maximize the benefits derived from these assets to serve the development needs of our people.
– I sponsored a motion to revoke the concessioning of Cross River State House in the Central Business District, Abuja. This move is essential for transparent and effective management of state resources, optimizing the benefits derived from the property, and fostering accountability.
– Together, we have co-sponsored motions addressing various issues including the implementation of a Contributory Pension Scheme, unjust taxation practices, healthcare infrastructure development, mining activities, waste management, and infrastructure development. These motions promote fairness, equity, and development for the benefit of our constituents and the state at large.
– Our collective efforts have also led to motions calling for the relocation of the dumpsite at Lemna for improved environmental conditions, the establishment of the Cross River State Infrastructure Development Agency to drive development, the construction of vital road networks, restoration of power supply, rehabilitation of public institutions in post-conflict areas, adherence to federal character principles in employment and recruitment processes, and the enforcement of regulations for vehicles’ safety and security.
HEALTHCARE INITIATIVES:
1. In the spirit of compassion, I provided financial assistance of one Million (₦1,000,000.00) Naira to Mr. Stephen Bassey Offor, a constituent in need of urgent treatment for a liver related ailment. It is our duty to provide care and support to those facing health challenges, demonstrating our commitment to their well-being.
2. A fruitful partnership was established with Angels Clinic in Ugep, offering free medical care and treatment to our constituents. This ongoing initiative has/is significantly reducing the financial burden on our people, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare services without any extra cost on them.
ESSENTIAL SERVICES:
1. I commissioned and officially handed over a Motorized Pipeborne Water Project to Eduma village in Ugep, to provide clean and drinkable water to residents. Access to clean water is essential for their health and overall well-being, and this project reflects our commitment to creating a sustainable and habitable community.
2. Generous made donations of Solar Panel Street lights to the General Hospital, Ugep and Community Secondary School, hence promoting security of public facilities as well as provide security for patients, staff, and students. Adequate lighting plays a crucial role in promoting the functionality and safety of these institutions, allowing them to serve our community better.
3. I graciously made a donation of ₦10,000,000.00 for the construction of a UltraModern Town Hall in Ijom.
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT:
In line with my campaign promises and the need to combat unemployment and economic challenges, the following initiatives were undertaken:
1. Financial assistance was extended to 100 NYSC 2023 Batch B Stream 1 Corps Members, helping to alleviate their financial burdens during their orientation camps across the country.
2. Motorcycles were provided to nine individuals, enabling them to have a sustainable means of livelihood and support themselves and their families effectively.
3. Toyota Corolla vehicles were presented to Mr. Nelson Nna Arikpo and Mr. Eze Fabulous Smart to support their commercial endeavors, providing a significant boost to their businesses and contributing to economic development in our constituency.
FOSTERING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:
1. Cash grants totaling 15 Million Naira were disbursed to empower and support 150 women-owned businesses. This financial boost has enabled these businesses to expand, grow, and create opportunities for themselves and their communities.
2. A substantial cash donation of 3.5 Million Naira was provided to Mr. Otu Ekong to establish a high-quality barbing shop. This support contributes to economic growth within our local community and empowers aspiring entrepreneurs.
EDUCATIONAL COMMITMENT
1. The costs for 518 constituents’ 2024 JAMB registration forms were fully covered, ensuring access to higher education and creating opportunities for academic aspirations to be achieved.
2. Educational support funds totaling 4.1 Million Naira were provided to 18 promising Law graduates from Yakurr Local Government Area as they began their Law School journey. This financial assistance allows them to focus on their legal education and career development, promoting access to legal education and empowering the future generation of legal professionals.
3. School fees were paid for over 170 children, both within and beyond our constituency, reflecting our commitment to providing quality education and securing a prosperous future for our community.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
In my efforts to foster inclusivity and ensure that the voices of the people shape my projects and leadership, I consistently engage with constituents at political and socio-cultural events. Most recently, we held a historic town hall meeting that drew a massive turnout. This further reiterates our commitment to listening and responding to our constituents feedback.
In addition to these projects and contributions, I facilitated the implementation of infrastructure projects and attracted investments that will enhance transportation infrastructure, improve public safety, and contribute to the overall development and well-being of Yakurr 1 State Constituency.
I am grateful to share that my dedication and contributions have been recognized and honored. Recently, I received the award for the ‘Best Performing Member of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly by the Forum of Ward Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Cross River State. This recognition reflects my exceptional dedication, leadership, and contributions to the legislative body and our constituents.
Similarly, the Ijom Traditional Rulers Council, conferred a Chieftaincy title of “Obol Nyonno 1 of Ijom Ibakiri” on me. This recognition will further reinforce my commitment and responsibility to serve our community with integrity and distinction.
As we reflect on these accomplishments and progress made in my first year in office as your servant, remember that there is still much work to be done. I remain committed to engaging with you, listening to your concerns, and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to build a brighter future for Yakurr 1 State Constituency.
