In celebration of the annual Obudu New Yam Festival, Mr. Julius Akem, Chief of Protocol to the Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, organized a community-based football competition and distributed food items to over 150 women (mostly widows) in Ohong village, Begiading ward of the LGA.

Speaking before the kick-off of the match, Mr. Julius Akem said the initiative was his own way of contributing to community development and promoting the spirit of sportsmanship among young people. He emphasized that the Obudu New Yam Festival represents not only cultural pride but also a platform to strengthen bonds across the local government area.

In addition to the football match, Mr. Akem, also distributed food items to over 150 women from Ohong village, Begiading ward as a gesture of love and support during the festive season. Food condiments and other essential items were distributed.
Commending the gesture, Pst. Abegim Godwin of Team-AG commended Mr. Akem for remembering the grassroots, especially women, during the celebration. Beneficiaries of the food outreach expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and impactful.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, commended Mr. Akem for his thoughtfulness and initiative, noting that the event aligns with the administration’s commitment to community empowerment, youth development, and cultural preservation.

The well-attended event, which was held at the (RCM) Central primary school Ohong, featured a novelty football match between selected youth teams (Team AG & Team Catholic Church) drawn from the community, and it concluded with the presentation of trophies, medals and cash to the participating football teams by the Council Chairman.
