The 8th Biase Legislative Council has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in its leader, and counciloy representing Adim ward, Hon. Egwu Egeh Umet, putting to rest widespread speculation surrounding his leadership following unverified impeachment rumours circulating online. The decisive endorsement came during a plenary session held on Thursday, with all ten councillors present reaffirming their support for Umet and denouncing what they described as “malicious attempts to destabilize governance” in the local government.

The motion was moved by Majority Leader Hon. Omatey Edem (Umon North Ward) and seconded by Hon. Edwin Ekpenyong (Akpet/Abini Ward), receiving full backing from the Assembly. Members praised Umet’s steadfast commitment to people-centered governance, citing his exceptional leadership, legislative focus, and consistent prioritization of the welfare of Biase residents.

Councillors categorically dismissed the impeachment claims as “politically motivated fabrications” designed to tarnish Umet’s reputation and derail the legislative agenda.

In a joint statement signed by the councillors, they declared their unwavering solidarity with the leader: “We stand shoulder-high with our leader and reject baseless allegations seeking to derail progress.”

The declaration bore the signatures of Deputy Leader Hon. Prince Ojoi (Umon North Ward), Chief Whip Hon. Innocent Uduma Ibe (Abayong Ward), and Hon. Peace Ukam (Erei South Ward), among others.

The confidence vote follows days of heightened social media speculation alleging financial impropriety and leadership tensions within the Assembly. While no formal impeachment proceedings were initiated, lawmakers noted that the smear campaign echoed efforts to undermine the Executive Chairman of Biase Local Government, Hon. Edodi Edodi, whose collaboration with the legislative arm remains strong.

Legislators condemned what they described as the growing influence of “political jobbers” using digital platforms to spread disinformation and sow discord in governance.

Although Umet refrained from addressing the rumours directly during the session, members of the Assembly pledged continued support for his leadership. They also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing key developmental initiatives in synergy with the executive arm, aimed at delivering tangible benefits to the people of Biase.
