The lawmaker representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey has called on the Federal Government to urgently release intervention funds.

Hon. Bassey, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, recalled that the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, had revealed during the unveiling of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency in Abuja that Nigeria is bracing for severe flooding expected to affect 1,249 communities across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory between April and November 2025.

According to Bassey, the timely release of the intervention funds will help in reducing the effect of disaster across the country.

He said that some states have started witnessing massive flooding, windstorm and wide shallow erosion occasioned by heavy rainfall across the country.

He added that the National Emergency Management Agency is playing a critical role in responding promptly to cases of disaster across the country, this he said needed funds.

Bassey called on citizens and relevant government agencies, especially the State and Local Government Areas Emergency Management Authorities, to immediately act as first respondents to cases of natural disaster.

The federal lawmaker sympathized with victims of windstorm in Calabar, the Cross River State capital and its environs over the destruction and loss of property during the windstorm that recently caused havoc in the city after a torrential rainfall.

He cautioned Nigerians against cutting down trees, emphasizing that it could have devastating environmental effects on their communities.
