The Acting Governor of Cross River State Acting, Rt. Hon. Dr. Peter Odey, has lauded graduates and distinguished honorees of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) during its 37th Convocation Ceremony, coinciding with the institution’s landmark 50th anniversary.
In a goodwill message, Dr. Odey described the event as a celebration of academic triumph, resilience, and UNICAL’s enduring role in fostering national progress.
“It is with immense pride and gratitude that I join the University of Calabar in celebrating her 50th Anniversary, a remarkable milestone in academic excellence, innovation, and national development. Unical has not only been a citadel of learning but also a beacon of transformation, shaping generations of scholars, professionals, and leaders who continue to make meaningful contributions across the world.” he stated.
Reflecting on his deep ties to the university, an alma mater from which he earned three degrees, Odey credited UNICAL for refining his worldview and values. “Unical has been instrumental in shaping my worldview, refining my aspirations, and equipping me with the knowledge and values that continue to guide my journey. The culture of intellectual curiosity instilled within these walls will remain a guiding light for me.” he shared.
Congratulating the graduates and the awardees, he commended their hard work, resilience and integrity, urging them to use their knowledge and skills to drive positive change in society.
The Acting Governor also celebrated high-profile awardees, including Hon. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ikperikpe Ekpo, FCT Minister, H.E. Nyesom Wike, Senate President’s wife Dr. Mrs. Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Agim, and Major General Moses Obi, among others. He hailed their contributions to national development as “exemplary and deserving of recognition.”
Closing with a forward-looking note, Odey expressed optimism for UNICAL’s future: “As we mark this golden jubilee, may UNICAL continue to soar to greater heights. Let this anniversary be a testament to our shared legacy and a call to even greater achievements. Congratulations to the students, alumni, and leadership of the University of Calabar. May the next 50 years be even more glorious.”
