The Cross River State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has successfully concluded a state-wide flood sensitization campaign aimed at mitigating the devastating effects of flooding across the state.
In collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), and other partner agencies, the campaign’s final phase took place in the Central Senatorial District, culminating in Ikom town on Wednesday, August 28th, 2024.
At the event in Ikom, Professor Emmanuel Eyo, the State Coordinator of NEWMAP, representing SEMA’s Director General, Apostle (Hon) James Anam, emphasized the urgency of the campaign. He highlighted recent warnings from NEMA about potential flooding in 2024 and stressed the importance of educating residents on the risks and preparedness measures necessary to protect lives and property.
He noted that the current administration under the leadership of Senator Prince Bassey Otu had taken proactive steps to mitigate the effects of flooding and protect lives and properties by providing valuable information for residents to take necessary precautions and respond effectively in the event of flood.
He emphasized the role of community involvement in flood management and urged residents to work together to identify safe evacuation routes and establish early warning systems.
The State NEWMAP boss urged residents to actively participate in flood management by clearing drainages, identifying safe evacuation routes, and establishing early warning systems.
The Secretary of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Ikom Zone, Mr Ojong Etta commended the collaborative efforts of SEMA, NEMA, and their partners in providing essential guidelines on flood preparedness.
He recounted the severe impacts of flooding on the district, with properties and farm produce worth millions lost almost every year. He expressed hope that this sensitization would better equip residents to face potential flooding.
Residents who attended the event praised the state government and its partners for their efforts and pledged to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety. They also committed to working with community-based organizations to ensure a swift and effective response to any emergencies.
