Cross River State has been recognized as the top-performing state in routine immunization coverage across Nigeria, reaffirming its dedication to public health, child welfare, and a healthier future for all.

This remarkable achievement was announced following the release of the latest National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2023-2024 report.

The success is largely credited to the dedication and unwavering commitment of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (CRSPHCDA), under the leadership of its dynamic Director General, Dr. Vivien Mesembe Otu.

Commenting on this development, Dr. Vivien Otu attributed the accomplishment to the proactive health policies and strategic investments championed by Governor, Apostle Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, and his wife, Bishop (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Bassey Otu. Their initiatives have included significant investments in the health sector, such as the procurement of vaccines and the implementation of health policies that ensure no child is left out of immunization programs.

She also commended the tireless efforts of healthcare workers, local government health teams, development partners, community-based organizations, and traditional and religious leaders for their unwavering dedication to improving immunization services throughout the state. Dr. Otu emphasized that the government remains committed to strengthening primary healthcare, expanding outreach programs, and ensuring the availability of vaccines in both urban and remote communities.

Furthermore, she noted that Cross River State has set a new benchmark for routine immunization in Nigeria, serving as an inspiration for other states to follow. “This is not just a victory for Cross River State,” Dr. Otu remarked, “but a victory for public health across Nigeria.”

Cross River State recorded the highest routine immunization (RI) coverage (95%) ahead of Lagos, Delta, Edo and the FCT, among other states.
