The Cross River State Government (CRSG), through the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, in collaboration with the Center for Community Policy and Strategic Development (CCPSD), is set to commence the next phase of its Capacity Building Workshop and Utilization Training for elected members of local government councils in the state.
According to a statement from the Executive Secretary of CCPSD, Rt. Hon. John Gaul, the training, themed “Building Critical Local Government Institutions for Good Governance and Sustainable Community Development: The Cross River State Model,” will take place from Monday, March 24th, to Tuesday, March 25th, 2025.
Gaul highlighted that similar training sessions have already been successfully conducted for 196 councilors, 54 Clerks, Deputy Clerks, and Sergeants-at-Arms across the state’s three senatorial districts.
These sessions produced a comprehensive situation analysis, gap analysis, and a gap closure strategy document, aimed at strengthening collaboration among the various arms of government at the local government areas.
Gaul further hinted that the upcoming workshop will focus on developing a best-practice administrative framework to enhance good governance and sustainable development within the local government system in Cross River State.
The event will be officially flagged off by the Acting Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, and is designed to equip local government institutions with the necessary skills to efficiently manage their affairs, especially in light of the new autonomy regime that Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu is committed to implementing.
The Capacity Building and Utilization Training for Elected Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) will be held at Hogis Luxury Hotel, State Housing Estate, Calabar.
The keynote address will be delivered by the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Chief Felix Idem, who previously flagged off the training for councilors and local government legislative officials in the Southern Senatorial District.
Additionally, key presentations will be made by the Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, the Economic Adviser to the Governor, the Commissioner of Finance, and leading experts from the private sector, revenue mobilization, and the World Bank’s GEM 3 project, among others.
