The Cross River State Forum of Councillors has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Bassey Edet Otu for their unwavering commitment to democratic governance and grassroots development as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day 2025.
In a statement issued in Calabar, the Forum’s Chairman and Leader of the Obudu Legislative Council, Hon. Eneji Sam, praised President Tinubu as a transformative leader whose policies have strengthened national unity and economic progress.
“President Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to justice, equity, and institutional reforms embodies the true spirit of June 12, a day that symbolizes Nigeria’s democratic resilience.
The Forum, comprising council leaders/councillors from all 18 Local Government Areas of Cross River, also lauded Governor Otu for his inclusive governance and impactful grassroots initiatives. They highlighted his administration’s achievements in rural infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment as key drivers of development.
“Governor Otu’s people-first approach has brought tangible progress to our communities, ensuring that democracy delivers real benefits to ordinary citizens,” the statement noted.
Reflecting on 26 years of unbroken democratic rule, the councillors called for unity, civic engagement, and sustained reforms to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.
“Democracy is a continuous journey, not a destination. We urge all citizens to remain vigilant, uphold accountability, and actively participate in nation-building,” the Forum stated.
Reaffirming their role as grassroots representatives, the councillors pledged to amplify the voices of their constituents and collaborate with state and federal governments to ensure inclusive development.
Democracy Day, observed every June 12, commemorates Nigeria’s historic 1993 presidential election and serves as a reminder of the nation’s enduring democratic ideals.
