The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has lauded Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for his visionary leadership and development strides, describing the state as Nigeria’s tourism capital and a key exporter of the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Kalu made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the Acting Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, on Thursday in Calabar, where he participated in activities marking the 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).

“Cross River is not just a state; it is a beacon of tourism, culture, and hospitality in Nigeria,” Kalu said. “From its breathtaking landscapes to its vibrant festivals, this state continues to showcase the beauty and heritage of our nation to the world.”

He praised the cordial relationship between the state executive and the House of Assembly, emphasizing that a strong democracy is built on mutual respect between the executive and legislative arms of government. Stressing the need for collaboration rather than conflict, Kalu aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, stating, “When the executive is actively working to solve problems, it is more productive to support their efforts rather than engage in opposition for opposition’s sake.”

Drawing from Cross River’s leadership, where both the governor and deputy governor have legislative backgrounds, Kalu advocated for aspiring executives to gain legislative experience before assuming leadership roles, saying, “The legislature is a training ground for governance. Those who have walked this path better understand policy-making and administration.”

He recalled his fond memories of attending the renowned Calabar Carnival with his children and expressed optimism about its continued vibrancy.

The Deputy Speaker also commended the University of Calabar for its role in producing exceptional graduates who have made meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s development. Reflecting on his personal connection to the institution, he described Calabar as his “second home” and noted that UNICAL has consistently nurtured leaders who are shaping the country’s future.

He also emphasized the need to restructure Nigeria’s education system to meet 21st-century challenges, advocating for research-driven policies that ensure institutions produce graduates equipped to drive national development.

In his response, Acting Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey commended the Deputy Speaker and his colleagues for their impressive legislative achievements in the 10th Assembly, particularly their ability to navigate complex national issues. He recognized Kalu’s leadership qualities, recalling their shared history at the University of Calabar and noting Kalu’s role as a student mediator even in his early years.

“Even back then, you demonstrated leadership,” Odey said. “It is no surprise that you now occupy such a high office, contributing to national development at the highest level.”

He attributed Governor Bassey Otu’s success to his extensive experience in the National Assembly, emphasizing that Cross River’s leadership benefits greatly from a strong legislative foundation.

He described the state as one of Nigeria’s best-governed subnational entities and highlighted its improved security, healthcare, reinvigorated tourism sector, and overall infrastructure development for economic prosperity.

“Cross River remains a model of good governance,” Odey stated. “Our security is stronger, and our tourism is thriving. The Calabar Carnival is as vibrant as ever, and I invite you all to come and experience it firsthand.”

Recognizing the University of Calabar’s legacy, he celebrated its role in producing national leaders, noting that both the Senate President and the Deputy Speaker are distinguished alumni of the prestigious institution.

“As a proud product of UNICAL, I am delighted that this institution continues to produce leaders who are making a difference in our country,” he said.

Odey assured visitors of their safety and warm hospitality, reaffirming Cross River’s commitment to national progress and development. “Cross River remains a place of peace, growth, and opportunity. We are proud of our contributions to Nigeria, and we will continue to move forward together,” he concluded.
