The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Council, Hon. Amb. Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, Ph.D, KSM, has reaffirmed his strong commitment to advancing education at the grassroots level following the successful defence of his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) thesis.

Speaking shortly after the defence at the Department of Geology, University of Calabar on Tuesday, Hon. Undiandeye described the academic achievement as “a humbling milestone and a reminder of the transformative power of education.” He noted that his personal journey through rigorous academic work has further strengthened his resolve to champion policies that will improve learning outcomes across the council area.

According to him, continuing a Ph.D while serving in public office was a deliberate decision to demonstrate that leadership must be rooted in continuous learning, discipline, and self-development. He stressed that education remains the most effective tool for empowering communities and breaking cycles of poverty.

Dr. Undiandeye reaffirmed that his administration will continue to prioritise educational development through improved funding for schools, renovation of dilapidated structures, provision of modern learning materials, and enhanced support for teachers’ welfare. He added that ongoing educational support initiatives at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels will be expanded to help more students achieve their academic goals.

He expressed gratitude to his supervisors, Internal, External Examiners, colleagues, and family for their unwavering support throughout his academic journey, dedicating the achievement to the youths and students of the council area.

During the defence of his thesis titled “Geophysical Interpretation on the Structural Elements, Geometry and Thermal Analysis in Anambra Basin: Implication for Hydrocarbon Prospectivity,” Undiandeye explained that his research integrates structural mapping, subsurface geometric evaluation, and thermal maturity modelling to better understand the basin’s hydrocarbon generation potential.

He noted that the study provides clearer insights into fault architecture, sediment deformation patterns, and heat-flow distribution-critical indicators of source rock maturity and reservoir viability. According to him, the findings not only enhance existing geological knowledge of the Anambra Basin but also offer valuable guidance for exploration activities aimed at improving hydrocarbon prospectivity in the region.

At the end of the exercise, the External Examiner, Prof. Idara Akpabio of the University of Uyo, speaking on behalf of the examining team, stated: “I am convinced that you have a good understanding of your research. We have carefully reviewed all the documents you presented-from the first page to the last. Having thoroughly examined your work, we find you worthy to be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geology by the University of Calabar, as approved by the Internal Examiner, Supervisor, Head of Department, and External Examiner, I make bold to say: Congratulations.”
