Cross River State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, on Friday, flagged off Advocacy Workshop on Disaster Management and Emergency Response for MDAs and Security Organization in Calabar
The one-day workshop, facilitated by the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), focused at addressing critical issues surrounding disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
The Deputy Governor in his keynote address said “Our government, the ‘People’s First Government’, is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our citizens, and events like today play a vital role in achieving this goal. I urge each and every one of you to actively participate, engage with the discussions, and take back valuable insights that can be implemented in your respective fields”.
He praised the facilitators, emphasizing the workshop’s timeliness, and urged participants to actively participate in discussions to improve their grasp of disaster resilience strategies tailored to the specific challenges encountered in the state.
In his welcome address, Hon. Anam, the Director General of SEMA, praised the Deputy Governor and all participants for their presence at the event. He highlighted the escalating frequency and severity of natural disasters and emergencies, emphasizing their substantial risks to our communities, infrastructure, and livelihoods. He urged participants and stakeholders to unite in strengthening the state’s preparedness and response capabilities to protect lives and properties.
The workshop had presentations such as Overview of Current Disaster Management Framework in Cross River State by Mr Vincent Aqua, Disasters & Emergency Preparedness: Government & International Partners Perspectives by Engr. Olu Andah and The Roles & Responsibilities of MDAs & Security Organisations in Ensuring a Collaborative Strategies for Disaster Management & Emergency Response by Prof. Emman Eyo (Coordinator NEWMAP CRS).
