In reaffirming Cross River State’s commitment to responsible governance and sustainable development, the Deputy Governor and Leader of the State’s delegation to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, PhD, has stressed that continuity in government projects is essential for strengthening governance and building citizens’ trust.
Speaking at the Belcrest Institute Dialogue, held on the sidelines of the Assembly, Dr. Odey observed that the frequent abandonment of projects by successive administrations has remained a major obstacle to development in Nigeria and across Africa.

“Continuity in government projects is not just about completing physical structures; it is about sustaining trust, consolidating governance gains, and ensuring that the people see the real impact of democracy in their lives,” he stated.
He emphasized that scarce resources are often wasted when projects are discontinued, stressing the need for leaders to focus on completion, sustainability, and strategic planning rather than frequent policy changes.
Reaffirming Governor Bassey Otu’s People First Agenda, Dr. Odey assured that the government is committed to completing inherited projects from previous administrations while introducing new initiatives for long-term growth. He highlighted notable strides under the Otu-led administration, including improved investor confidence, road rehabilitation, expanded access to healthcare and education, empowerment programmes for farmers and youth, as well as progress on strategic projects inherited from previous governments such as the Bakassi Deep Seaport, Obudu Cargo and Passenger Airport, and the Obudu Ranch Resort.

Earlier in a keynote address, Amb. Dennis Antoine, former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Grenada to the UN, emphasized that technology and talent development are central to achieving sustainable national success.
Other participants in the virtual dialogue themed “Partnership for Effective Governance” included Anna Faith, Head of the Women’s Empowerment Principles Secretariat at UN Women; Dr. Emeka Ofor, CEO of Chrome Group Nigeria; and Amb. Linda Middleton, CEO of Kaleidoscope Business Group.
Others were Andrew Thorburn, Senior Trade and Development Expert, and Drago Napotnik, General Manager (China) PM/Partner Marketing, among others.
