The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has achieved a significant milestone by hosting its first-ever hybrid Senate meeting, setting a new benchmark in the institution’s commitment to digital innovation and administrative efficiency.
The 120th regular Senate meeting, held on Thursday, brought together members from the university’s various campuses, including Ogoja and Okuku, through virtual participation via Skype.
Speaking during the session, Vice Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey, said this development allowed members to engage in deliberations without the stress and cost of long-distance travel.
“This move is both strategic and necessary” She said. “It will help protect our colleagues from the stressful and risky to-and-fro trips, while aligning with our goal to minimize spending on transportation and accommodation for Senate members who previously had to travel to Calabar.”
To strengthen the university’s leadership and improve both administrative and academic performance, Vice Chancellor Prof. Francisca Bassey announced the appointment of two new Deputy Vice Chancellors. Prof. Thomas Ojikpong was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), while Prof. Stella Maris-Okey was named Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics).
In furtherance, she pledged her administration’s commitment to drive a new era of academic excellence, digital transformation, and prudent resource management.
In another major development, the Senate approved the establishment of the Faculty of Computing, in accordance with guidelines from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The newly created faculty will comprise the Departments of Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Technology, which were previously part of the Faculty of Physical Sciences.
According to the Senate, the establishment of the Faculty of Computing is a strategic step toward enhancing academic focus, advancing technological education, and aligning with national and global trends in digital innovation.
The meeting was also significant as it marked the first Senate session since Prof. Bassey’s confirmation as substantive Vice Chancellor by the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu.
