UNICROSS Sets Record Straight on Certificate Signing, Commends Prof. Bassey’s Leadership

The management of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has debunked a misleading Facebook post circulating under the unofficial page name “CRUTECH (UNICROSS) STUDENTS/ASPIRANTS UPDATE 2025/2026.”

In a statement issued by the UNICROSS Media Team, the University described the publication – which accused the Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, of deliberately delaying the signing of students’ certificates and neglecting their welfare, as false, malicious, and the handiwork of faceless individuals intent on tarnishing the reputation of the institution and its leadership.

“The tone and content of the post are inconsistent with the conduct of genuine UNICROSS students,” the statement read. “It is a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and undermine the credibility of the Vice Chancellor.”

The management reaffirmed its confidence in Professor Bassey’s leadership, noting her exceptional commitment to student welfare, academic excellence, and institutional reform since assuming office. Her open-door policy, the statement said, has fostered trust and collaboration between the University’s management and students.

Citing an instance of her relationship with students, the statement recalled comments by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Igbeng Emmanuel Lazarus, who described the Vice Chancellor as “a workaholic whose open-door policy and swift responses have re-ignited hope and trust in student governance.”

Addressing concerns over the delayed release of Mop-Up examination results, the University clarified that the issue predated the current Vice Chancellor’s administration and stemmed from unresolved grievances by some lecturers. Upon assuming office, Prof. Bassey reportedly resolved those issues, ensured payment of arrears, and directed the immediate processing and release of pending results, which are now ready for upload.

The statement also highlighted several reforms introduced under Prof. Bassey’s leadership to enhance efficiency and accountability. Among them is the creation of the Directorate of Examinations and Results-the first in the University’s history-tasked with ensuring prompt grading and release of results. Lecturers are now mandated to upload results within specific timelines or face sanctions, including salary suspension for delays.

According to the University, most second-semester results for the 2024/2025 academic session have already been uploaded, while the first-semester results were released earlier in record time. Additionally, over five million historical results spanning more than a decade are being digitized for easy online access.

To further improve transparency, the University introduced Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for General Studies courses, allowing students to access their results immediately after submission.

Contrary to the claims in the viral post, the management confirmed that thousands of certificates have already been signed and released by the Vice Chancellor, with the latest batch signed just nine days ago. “There is no unsigned certificate on the Vice Chancellor’s table as of this statement,” the University emphasized.

The management further warned that the Facebook page spreading the misinformation is not recognized by UNICROSS and does not represent the views of its students or administration.

“UNICROSS remains focused on advancing the People First vision of the State Government through innovation, transparency, and student-centered reforms,” the statement concluded.
